What are the qualifications for USPS membership?
We’re a boating club so the main qualification is that you are interested in boating. It can be any kind of boating, power, sail, or human powered. It can be on any size boat and you don’t even have to own a boat yourself. Many of our members do not own a boat but they have fun boating with other members. We are a non-profit, volunteer organization focusing on boating education and civic service so we ask our members to be willing to contribute time, energy and skills to help the squadron meet the objectives of the United States Power Squadrons. Although USPS has no educational requirement for membership we do encourage all boaters to have competed a NASBLA* "approved” boating course. We believe in this so strongly that if you take our America’s Boating Course we will give you your first eighteen months of membership in the squadron for the price of twelve. Go to our ABC Course page to find out more about this super course.
Are there different classes of membership?
USPS has just two classes of active membership. Active members are over the age of 18. Additional family members may become active members at a reduced rate and my join at 16 years of age.
Apprentice members are over the age of 12 and less than 23 years of age.
In addition to active members the squadron has associate and honorary members that do not pay dues or have access to the benefits offered by USPS.
How much does it cost to be a member?
Dues for active members include National, District and Squadron components and are currently $87.00 per year. The first additional member in the same household pays only an additional $43.50 per year while each additional member beyond the first pays only $8.00. A $20.00 new member processing fee is charged along with the first year's dues. Apprentice members pay just $12 per year and have the option to convert their membership to active status anytime between their 18th and 23rd birthday. Those who take the USPS America's Boating Course are eligible to join the squadron and receive 18 months of membership for the price of 12 months for the first year.
